The Importance of Sinus Health

sinus health

Your sinuses can easily get infected. If they are infected or if you experience sinus pressure, then you could experience pain, drainage, and difficulty breathing. Your sinus health is important as any infection that does develop can quickly travel to other areas of your body, especially your brain or your heart since these areas are close to your sinuses. Fortunately, there are ways that you can keep your sinuses as healthy as possible.

Once you begin the proper treatments for sinus issues, recovery is usually a fast process. An antibiotic is usually prescribed if there are signs of an infection. This type of medication can promote healthy drainage that will result in the normal function of your sinuses instead of the blockage remaining. In order to keep the mucous membranes moisturized, you should drink plenty of water each day. This also keeps the mucus in your sinuses loose so that it can easily drain.

If you have a sinus infection or notice that your sinuses are dry, then inhale steam a few times each day. You can use a pot to boil water and then inhale the steam once the pot is removed from the burner. Try to sleep with your head elevated so that drainage doesn’t settle in your sinuses. Use decongestant medications as recommended. If over-the-counter medications don’t work, then talk to our doctor about the best kind to use so that you can keep the mucus in your sinuses loose.

One medication that you want to avoid taking for sinus issues is an antihistamine. This is a medication that is better for allergies. It tends to make the mucus in your sinuses harder than normal, which can make it difficult for your sinuses to drain at night. Use a saline nasal spray to keep your sinuses moist. Another way that you can keep your sinuses healthy is by rinsing them with saline. Our doctor can use special products for sinus health that will allow a saline solution to flow from one sinus and come out the other side. This treatment will flush out any loose mucus that is present, keeping bacteria from developing and keeping an infection from forming. If you experience pain from your sinuses, then you can place a warm cloth over your face to relieve the pressure as this can help with pain relief.
